Home Repair Program provides a complete home rebuild for a woman in need.

A community-driven act of kindness has brought hope for Mrs. Batres, who has faced unimaginable hardships in her life.

After losing her husband in 2020, she was left to manage their home alone while taking care of her son, who faces multiple health challenges.

Her home didn’t have heating or cooling and required major repair.

Then, through its Home Repair Program, the City of Houston’s Housing and Community Development Department fixed up her home.

This life-changing gesture left Mrs. Batres feeling overwhelmed with gratitude and emotion.

“This project means absolutely the world that we can give to deserving families, creating a community. This helps revitalize our housing stock as well as provide affordable housing throughout the city,” said Cedrick Lasane, Assistant Director of Single Family Operations for the City of Houston.

An encounter with a meaningful song aids in the recovery of a young boy.

Yoneda Sosuke experienced a devastating loss at a young age. His family lost their home in last year’s Noto Peninsula earthquake.

They had to move several times, taking refuge in evacuation centers and temporary housing units. Since the harrowing incident, Yoneda has been experiencing difficulty falling asleep.

Now, the 11-year-old is slowly recovering and becoming more like his normal self.

The song ‘Dear Earth,’ a ballad about saving planet Earth by Hanzaki Yoshiko, has played a big role in his healing journey.

Yoneda’s story is a great example of how powerful music can be for the healing process.

“I feel the song calling to me like it’s worried about my mental wellbeing. Sometimes I feel sad thinking about Noto. I feel grateful because the song sustains me,” said Yoneda.

A man graduates college at 60 as a final promise to his late mom.

Allen Brooks made his late mother’s wish come true by graduating college in December 2024.

The 60-year-old first enrolled at Alabama A&M in 1982 on a partial band scholarship. But life got in the way and he left the University in 1986 without a degree.

In 2020, Brooks enrolled at Alabama A&M again and started taking classes while working full-time. A promise to his late mother gave him a renewed sense of motivation to finish college.

“Whatever you’re trying to get to make yourself better, you’re going to be faced with some type of adversity, some type of problem, but you gotta just find it within yourself [to] just keep on going. The key is to never stop – and even if you do stop, you can always pick back up where you left off,” said Allen.
