Teacher uses football math activities to get students excited about learning.
The students at MaST Community Charter School II are learning math through football!
Second-grade teacher Amber Kiley incorporates football team Philadelphia Eagles statistics to help her students practice their math skills.
Her students use Eagles player Saquon Barkley’s rushing yards as they learn place values. Also, watching football highlights during class gets students excited about learning math!
“Even beyond the sports part of it, it’s fostering that nice community environment here. We tie our football into our community. So, they are learning about the community around us,” said Amber.
Band harnesses the unifying power of music to uplift people.
The Flame, a Hong Kong Cantopop band, is making a meaningful impact on the local audience.
The band has been holding monthly Cantopop busking performances, which provide people with a refreshing break from the daily grind.
Their busking shows attract hundreds of people; all clapping, singing their lungs out, and dancing along for hours. Amidst the chaos of life, these shared moments of joy bring strength to many people.
“There are a lot of difficulties in our lives and a lot of things to overcome. But it’s like a taste of sweetness amid the bitterness when a group of people gather once a month and go crazy and let out what they’ve been suppressing,” said Kit Cheung, The Flame vocalist.
An inclusive shelter system brings hope for domestic violence survivors and their pets.
“PALS,” the People & Animals Living Safely program, in partnership with the NYC Department of Homeless Services provides pet-inclusive housing for domestic violence survivors.
For individuals fleeing abuse, this program offers a crucial support system along with pet-friendly services.
Having safe spaces that allow people and animals to stay together is instrumental for survivors.
“We launched PALS based on a belief that pets are family. Pets are our companions, our confidants. We recognize that it is too much to ask to have someone in a crisis have to leave a pet behind,” said Jennifer White-Reid, Chief of Staff, Urban Research Institute.
Man brings smiles to community with his special kindness cards.
One person’s daily act of kindness is exemplifying the importance of community spirit.
Princeton Ballarino works at the Publix in the Pine Ridge Crossing shopping center in Collier County, Florida.
Princeton hands out kindness cards to the people he meets during his daily routine, whenever he’s corralling carts, or helping with groceries.
The entire community appreciates his customer service and acts of kindness. It goes to show a little kindness can go a long way in building more cohesive communities.
“Kindness impacts me in many ways. It helps me have a good mood and inspire others to be kind because we definitely need more kindness now than ever, especially in our community,” said Princeton.
