Exercises for Recovery from Prostate Surgery

Are you worried about your bladder leakage after prostate surgery? If so, be relaxed because 80% of the men suffer from the same problem. Apart from traditional pelvic floor muscle exercises, some new physical exercise methods are available. These new methods are quite effective in many ways.

When to start exercise?

Starting, the first question which comes to mind is when these exercises should be started. According to research, you should start these exercises at least five weeks before prostate surgery. Though this is the best time to get started, even if your plan is for a week later, you should also start these exercises a week before. Having these exercises before an operation is quite useful compared to those done after it. Because after surgery, it is extremely difficult to even move from your position.

Best positions for exercise

The three best positions to perform these exercises are

  • Lying down
  • Standing up
  • Sitting down

If you find it difficult to exercise in a standing or sitting position, you should do them lying. Moreover, after surgery, you should perform exercises in a lying position.

Best exercise techniques

The most powerful exercise techniques include Kegal exercises. But in simpler terms, you must follow a tiny step. You only need to:

  • control the flow of your urine
  • try to squeeze pelvic floor muscles
  • continue to breathe

For controlling the flow of urine, you should contract your genital muscles. If you cannot handle it entirely, try to stop it for some time. Then try to squeeze your genitals, just like a turtle does it with its body. You have to draw your breath inwards and then slowly outwards to relax during these steps. This exercise is somehow tough than others. So generally, it takes more practice.

Number of required exercises

Let’s discuss several exercises required to recover from prostate surgery:

Before surgery

You can do long and quick exercises if you are practicing before surgery. For example, you must train yourself for quick contraction and relaxation of muscles. These exercises do not require much time. Even if you perform them for a couple of seconds daily, you can practice them well. With time, you will notice that you can hold contractions for more extended periods than before.

Before surgery, you must perform 120 exercises daily. Ten of them are quick exercises, and 20 are more extended exercises. But, between the longer exercises, try to take a rest of 10 seconds.

After surgery

After surgery, if you have a problem of leakage from the gall bladder, try to start exercises in a lying-down position. Then gradually move towards the semi-sitting position. Once the issue of urine leakage is resolved, you can perform exercises in a standing position. However, the number of exercises after surgery depends on your capacity. But, if you try to perform more and more exercises, you will recover very fast.
